第一次世界大戦下のカリフォルニア州サーリナス。
24歳のキャルは農場を営む父アダムが、兄のアロンばかりを可愛がっていると感じ、反抗的な問題児扱いされていた。
落ちこぼれで愛に飢えたキャルを、恋人のアブラは何かと気にかけていた。 ある日、キャルは死んだと聞かされていた母ケートが実は生きていて、
モントレーで酒場を経営していることを知る。アダムが野菜の輸送中の事故で無一文になった時、キャルは父親を助けようと、ケートに資金を借りに行くが…。

感想
監督はエリア・カザン。
今見るとずいぶんとのんびりしている。それと、演技が大仰だ。
ジェームズ・ディーンは、下手ではないが大して上手くはない。
ストーリーそのものも、スタインベックの原作の後半部分だけだが、前半は登場人物に語られるだけだ。そのせいで、「敬虔なアダム」の頭がガチガチな部分などがただの「父親」になってしまった。
どうも、前年に東部から引っ越してきたという設定なのだろうか。そんなよそ者があの町ででかいつらができるとは思えないのだが。やはり、原作通り西部で育った設定の方が良い。
原作はおすすめです。長いけど。
